Excelling in Visibility

The BEPA Saturday tutorials were started in September 1988 under the Presidency of Coleridge Bispham, the initial Program Director.  Assisting him were his wife, Thelma Bispham; Ulric Denny; and John Small.  This team managed this program until sometime in 1993, when the Bisphams relocated to Florida.  In 1993, President Ulric Denny, took over as Director of the program and he was partnered with Lenox Price until 2000 when brother Denny relocated to Barbados.   In 2000, brother Lennox Price took over and ran the program with help from some of his friends and associates until 2008.  In 2010 or thereabout, Judge Sylvia Hinds/Raddix, her husband Dr. Joseph Radix and their daughter Attorney at law Jovia Radix, managed the program until 2020 when COVID19 made it impossible to conduct the business as usual, and it was placed on hold.  Currently, the program is dormant and will be restarted soon.

Brother Wesley Hope.

On April 11, 1998, the mentorship program was birthed under the Presidency of brothers Mc. Donnaver Gill, and Leroy Hutchinson, Vice President.  At that Saturday monthly meeting, under the topic “Good and Welfare,” brother Wesley Hope delivered a passionate plea to the membership on “mentorship’ and how the BEPA would make itself more relevant in creating such a program to help the marginalized and disenfranchised neighborhood kids, ages 8 to 18.  After hearing the appeal and the potential rewards of this plan, and its long-term benefits, the President immediately asked Wesley Hope to give leadership to this program. He was made the Chairperson and was assisted by the following committee members and Mentors: Leroy Hutchinson; Malcolm Best; Dennis Yarde; Dr. Janice Farley; Social Workers and Counselors Aloysius Cox-Belgrave and Delfreea Harris. Palm cards were printed and distributed throughout the neighborhoods and churches.  Having received interest from this venture, we started seeing Clients at our headquarters, 703 Crown Street and to date would have seen about twenty-five Mentees.  This program had a seventy-five percent success rate but unfortunately was placed on hold indefinitely because of the breakout of COVID 19.  There are obvious plans to restart this program soon.  By Bro Wesley Hope

Brother Keith. N. Hall.

The purpose of this committee was to mentor young boys and girls from our catchment area who were inclined to follow bad influences, had a tendency to be high-school drop-outs and finally become a statistic of one of our local Police Precincts. Once identified, these children would either be asked to meet with our team at 703 Crown Street and at times, if the client so chose, a telephone conversation would suffice. My first choice of interaction, however, was personal and I can attest that my team’s personal contact efforts paid dividends.

One extremely positive result which emanated from our program and which continues to resonate with me till today, came because of a few home visits to a client’s residence, who complained of her young son’s fondness with frequent visitation to an area which she did not recommend for social activity. Her son would not listen to her advice which caused our intervention to be requested.

During our second visit, I remember Bros. Cumberbatch and Gill suggesting to me, “You speak to the young man, we will listen”. I’m happy to say that after that conversation, the mother of that young man reported to us, her son has changed direction. He no longer visits that area spends more time at home doing his home-work and she can attest to the change. Finally, that very mother eventually became a member of BEPA, only because of what we did for her son.

The Prayer Breakfast Program:

Sometime in 1999, under the presidency of bother Mc.Donnaver Gill, the BEPA membership in corroboration with the Chaplain Wesley Hope at that time, set aside a day to pray in the form of free prayer breakfasts once per month on Saturdays at 703 Crown Street, Brooklyn.  Facilitators of these prayer breakfasts were: the late Bishop Randolph Bowen; Canon Iverson Waldron; Reverend Prescott Hoskins among other luminaries.
